Lyrics

Words waiting
for a voice.

I write country and Americana lyrics: characters caught in a moment, a room, a stretch of highway. Stories shaped into verses and choruses, with space for the artist who hears a song in them.

This songbook brings the words together with reference demos. Each demo offers one possible direction; the next interpretation begins with a conversation.

Hear a possibility?
Let’s give it a voice.

If a lyric speaks to you, I’d like to hear where you imagine it going. I welcome conversations with artists, musicians, composers, producers, publishers, labels, agents, and teams working in film, television, and soundtracks.

We can explore co-writing, a new musical direction, lyric revisions, licensing, recording opportunities, or a possible hold. There is room to build an interpretation around the artist and the project.

Start with the song and what you have in mind. Before any recording, adaptation, or release, we’ll agree in writing on permission, credits, fees or royalties, and any applicable songwriting splits. Publishing a lyric here does not grant permission to use it.

About the demos

I write lyrics
for people to sing.

The original lyrics are written by me, Jordi Gaxiola. They are the creative work I offer for collaboration.

I write lyrics for people to sing. I respect and support human artists, musicians, composers, producers, and recording professionals. These DEMOS are a starting point for collaboration, not a substitute for their craft.

What I offer is the lyric, not a recording for release. A new melody, arrangement, and interpretation are welcome, by agreement.

The music and vocals were generated to illustrate one possible interpretation of my lyrics, not a performance or a finished artist release.

If a lyric speaks to you, let’s talk about where you could take it. Any use or collaboration requires a separate written agreement covering permission, credits, and applicable terms.

The lyric is the work I bring.
The demo is one possibility.
The next interpretation begins with people.

Just You

Two nights down in the Alabama mud With a busted arm and a mouth full of blood Truck on its roof where the creek runs wide Should’ve been the place I died. I don’t know how I climbed that hill Something in me wouldn’t lie still Every time my knees gave way Your name was all that I could say You came stumbling through those pines Like a ghost that changed its mind You closed your eyes and cried Rain came down warm, that moon turned blue Two hearts beating like they just broke through Tell me what kept you hanging on Baby, Just you I’d been moving through the days Like a house with no lights on Folks could stand right next to me And never know how far I’d gone Then you reached out through that rain And I felt your fingers shake I’d been numb for so damn long I’d forgotten hearts could ache You held on like you’d been drowning too Maybe saving me was saving you You closed your eyes and cried Rain came down warm, that moon turned blue Two hearts beating like they just broke through Tell me what kept you hanging on Baby, Just you I can’t tell you where I went I can’t tell you where I’ve been But I could hear you in that dark Say my name like that again “June…” Rain came down warm, that moon turned blue Two hearts beating like they just broke through We found one thing worth holding on to Just you, baby, just you You came back You did too Just you...

She Was Always Blue

The sky was blue the day we met Her eyes were blue, her dress was too She’d pause a while before she’d speak As if she heard somebody else Her laughter broke like little waves She’d look past me across the room I felt a humming when we touched I thought my heart had learned her tune She was always blue I just didn’t know I hate the blue for taking you I love it ’cause it’s all that’s left Some nights I want to curse the sky And thank it in the same damn breath We loved through winter into spring Left two cups drying by the sink Some days she’d stop halfway to me As if she’d heard somebody sing And year by year she drifted off A little farther out to sea Her body lay beside me still But there was less of her with me I hate the blue for taking you I love it ’cause it’s all that’s left Some nights I want to curse the sky And thank it in the same damn breath One morning, sitting by the glass She turned her face into the light I knew the woman looking back And knew that something wasn’t right I reached to hold her where she sat My arms closed on the morning air I begged her, “Stay.” She smiled at me. The light lay on the empty chair I hate the blue for taking you I love it ’cause it’s all that’s left Some nights I want to curse the sky And thank it in the same damn breath Did you leave me, darlin’? Or did it call you home? I listen for an answer. The blue keeps humming low.

The Life I Drove Right By

Lexus in for service, Took Dad’s old seventy-nine. Left my name and “C.E.O.” On the office door behind. He’d farmed a rented eighty, Never bought a thing for show. Two years since we’d buried him, Still couldn’t let that pickup go. Norman-bound on Thirty-Five, Not a brake light moved. Took the Ladd Road exit, Then north on Ladd Avenue. No map lit up that dashboard; My phone stayed in my coat. Thought I’d beat the line through Goldsby On a little road I didn’t know. Slipped my tie off, rolled my sleeves, Cranked the window down. Found some Merle between the static, And I sang the words out loud. Rain came fallin’ through the sunshine, A rainbow touched the field. I watched it longer than I should have, Smilin’ behind the wheel. Then the song was somewhere far away, And blue was all I knew. Something warm above my eyebrow, And the rain kept comin’ through. I was eight, out past the hay barn, Cane pole, bare feet in the mud. Mama hollerin’ from the screen door, Daddy sayin’, “One more, bud.” Then my boy held up his first fish In a picture on my phone. My wife had sent it Friday. I’d been workin’ late alone. All that sky, all that blue, Nothing I could own or buy. Everything that mattered Was right there before my eyes. I’d spent so long gettin’ somewhere, Never stopped to wonder why. Now I was lyin’ in the middle Of the life I drove right by. Past the stalks, Dad’s crumpled pickup, One headlight shinin’ white. Then the bend came back in pieces— Wet blacktop, one long slide. I could see the door I’d crawled from, Hear the cooling engine tick. Corn leaves brushed against my collar. It all came back, bit by bit. Thought I saw my daddy’s face In a cloud above the corn. Then sunlight broke. A hand reached down: “You okay, son?” A rancher out there checkin’ fence Had seen me from the road. He held my hand till help arrived. I said, “Please call my wife.” Six weeks later, I cleared my desk. The board found someone new. Had Dad’s old pickup straightened out; Kept the paint he’d worn clean through. We moved the kids out to a little farm, Where the old dog runs all day. My wife and I sit out till dark. There’s always somethin’ left to say. All that sky, all that blue, Nothing I could own or buy. Everything that matters Runnin’ barefoot by my side. I’ve still got plenty left to do, But for once I’ve got the time. And we’re finally here, livin’ The life I used to drive right by.

Blue Peterbilt

Blue Peterbilt, nineteen-eighty, 359 The diesel’s deep roar rose into a whine Rain came hard and thunder rolled across the plain He held his lane, alone beneath the weather’s reign Eighteen wheels were humming, miles unrolling fast No load behind him, no one in his path He drove the empty highway, a blue streak through the night His hands tight on the wheel in the dashboard’s amber light Blue Peterbilt, cut through the rain Past the blacktop rivers and the thunder’s refrain Not a soul to chase, not a debt to outrun Just a mile after mile till the night was done Then the CB crackled through the cab’s low roar A voice said, “Your wife’s in labor, Doctor Markert’s on his way” He gripped the wheel, the storm could split the sky He had to reach Stroud, had to be there by her side Lincoln County waited past the flooded fields He eased through every bend, kept both hands on the wheel No danger left behind him, no life put at risk Just one man and a promise he could not dismiss Blue Peterbilt, home through the rain He reached her room as morning softened the pane She took his hand; their boy let out a cry He held his first-born son while tears filled his eyes Stroud, Oklahoma, heard that newborn sound And the long road finally laid its burden down

Don't Be Sorry, Be Here

We drove till the blacktop ran out of names Past Johnson City in the pouring rain Radio off, I couldn't take a song Some days a melody just hurts too strong Parked by the field behind the old high school Watched some kids kick a half-flat ball Didn't have a plan, didn't wanna go home Just needed somewhere to be alone Johnny found me sitting on the concrete steps Said, “I've been looking everywhere” I said, “I'm sorry,” he sat down close Like he already knew what put me there Said, “We could head south, we could leave tonight Your bag in the back, drive in my truck” He looked at me like I was missing the point Said, “What are you running for?” I said, “I just want you safe” He said, “Safe from what?” I looked out at that Tennessee dark And said, “Baby, all of it” He said, You don't have to fix tonight You don't have to outrun the darkness You don't have to make it right If we're the last two people standing When the whole damn world disappears You don't have to save me, baby Just, be here” I asked him if he was scared, he said, “Yeah Of things I can't put into words Feels like the world's coming down around us And everybody else heard first” Then those blue eyes found me in the dark Blue like a sky I'd almost forgot And something I'd locked up inside my chest Opened right there in that parking lot I said, “Maybe we're just pioneers With nowhere left to go” He laughed through tears and took my hand Said, “Maybe that's all we need” He said, You don't have to fix tonight You don't have to outrun the darkness You don't have to make it right If we're the last two people standing When the whole world disappears You don't have to save me, baby Just be here” No radio No headlights No promise it'll all turn out alright Just his hand finding mine On the steps beneath a Tennessee sky And for the first time in days I could almost hear a song Don't be sorry, be here Let tomorrow come when it comes We don't have to beat the darkness We just don't have to face it alone And if we're the last two people standing When everything we know disappears I don't need you to save me Just need you to be here The radio played low Some sweet old country song We stayed there And for that night That was enough

Dark Desire

The midwife dropped the lantern when the noon sky went blind The sun was swallowed whole, and the hounds began to whine I didn't cry when I hit the air... I just waited for the dark to stay I was born beneath a strangled sun, in the teeth of a black eclipse With the taste of rusted iron and original sin on my lips The levee broke at the county line, the floodwaters took the pews And the preacher drowned in the muddy deep while the devil sang the blues I grew up half-feral on a diet of static, gasoline, and grief Breaking wild-eyed stallions with the morals of a midnight thief Got a graveyard behind my ribs and a furnace in my veins Trading the reins of a runaway horse for a V8 wrapped in chains You were shivering in your Sunday white on the hood of my rusted truck Saying you were tired of praying to a God who didn't give a fuck Black rain pouring like a biblical flood, plastering the lace to your skin And the lightning showed me paradise in the places where we’d been Your mouth was a sacrament of venom and wine, bruising against my throat While the storm winds tore the steeple down and set the coffins afloat You whispered, "Boy, are we going to Hell?" with your fingers in my hair I said, "Baby, feel the heat on the glass, we’re already halfway there" Let the choirboys sing about "Forever," let the angels keep their gold We were never meant to be forgiven, and we were never meant to grow old Every heartbeat is a piston firing at the edge of the redline And your body is the only altar where a damned man wants to shine Give me the dark, give me the flood Give me the fever of your reckless blood Throw away Forever for the wicked light of Tonight We’re tearing down the mountain with the devil in the rearview mirror Every sin is a hallelujah as the canyon edge gets nearer Let the wild horses trample the cross, let the engine block catch fire We’re gonna die young in the wreckage of a holy, dark desire The dashboard glows like a bed of coals, ninety-five through the blinding rain And a herd of phantom mares is galloping wild right beside the passing lane Their hooves are striking sparks off the asphalt, their manes are tangled with smoke While I got one hand on your trembling thigh and the other on the choke Your daddy’s on the porch with a shotgun and a Bible in his fist Cursing the shadow of the outlaw boy that his fallen angel kissed But the river is rising over the bridge, and the brakes are cut and gone And we don’t need a single prayer where we’re headed before the dawn Touch me where the darkness hurts, kiss the ashes on my mouth While the heavens above are ripping apart and the compass needles point south If salvation is a quiet grave after eighty years of shame Then baptize me in the high-octane and christen me with a flame Look out the windshield, darlin', the wooden guardrail’s giving way Swear to God you want the fire before the night turns into clay Give me the dark, give me the flood Give me the fever of your reckless blood Throw away Forever for the wicked light of Tonight We’re tearing down the mountain with the devil in the rearview mirror Every sin is a hallelujah as the canyon edge gets nearer Let the wild horses trample the cross, let the engine block catch fire We’re gonna die young in the wreckage of a holy, dark desire The sun went black the day I was born And it’s going black again in your arms No tomorrow, baby No Forever Just the rain hissing on the flames And the horses running free in the dark

Only Echo

The night the water took the boat My ear was pressed against her chest I heard her heart above the waves And let her arms do all the rest I didn’t scream. I closed my eyes. There wasn’t much that I could do Fear was in those arms that night And love was in there too Only echo Your voice caught in my own An ocean lay between our doors The morning that the call came through The room went quiet before it rang My body knew before I knew They said, “She’s gone.” I dropped the phone. Outside, life moved on like nothing changed Like nothing in the world was lost But my whole world stopped Only echo Your voice caught in my own I send a sound into the dark And it comes back alone Nothing finished, nothing mended Only echo I walk in daylight, full of dread Say, “Morning,” when the neighbors do I speak to ghosts with some respect Leave room for them to wander through My old dog leans against my leg I run my fingers through his coat Like I could hold a comet still Like love could teach a thing to float At night the wind lays down its head And puts an ear against the ground I open up my mouth for her And let what has no name come out Only echo Your voice caught in my own I send a sound into the dark And it comes back alone Nothing finished, nothing mended Only echo No closure. Only echo. For my Mom September 22, 2017

Country Opera

I’m dating this girl She’s pretty and smart Her daddy had tickets To some high-class art He said, “Son, we’re going To the opera tonight” I nodded like I knew What the hell that meant in life Her daddy asked, “You like Puccini?” I said, “Yeah, I’ve heard he’s good” My girl just smiled beside me Like she knew I never could Velvet seats and chandeliers The orchestra began to swell I loosened up my collar And somewhere in there fell Into a country opera Where the cowboys sang all night Fiddles chased the violins And the steel guitar took flight There were horses, guns and whiskey A saloon girl dressed in red Tenors riding through the moonlight With a price upon their head It was a country opera Big as Texas, loud and wild High-noon heartbreak in four parts And I was grinning like a child There was an outlaw at the poker table Cheating with an ace A sheriff with a silver star And trouble on his face A black horse tied outside the door A train whistle down the track And some poor cowboy singing ’Bout a girl who won’t come back Then the saloon doors flew open And a villain crossed the floor The piano player stopped dead When his boots came through the door (Cowboys) Ride, boys, ride High noon’s burning in the sky (Soprano) Oh, don’t let my cowboy fall (Cowboys) Hold your ground Draw your gun Somebody ain’t leaving when the song is done It was a country opera Where the cowboys sang all night Fiddles chased the violins And the steel guitar took flight There were horses, guns and whiskey A saloon girl dressed in red Tenors riding through the moonlight With a price upon their head It was a country opera Big as Texas, loud and wild High-noon heartbreak in four parts And I was grinning like a child Then I saw my girl up on the balcony Calling out my name I don’t know when I became the hero But I sure joined the game I jumped a horse and crossed the street With a six-gun at my side The outlaw yelled, “Come meet your maker” I said, “Buddy, step outside” The whole damn choir hit a high note The fiddle started burning fast I reached down for my pistol Then I heard a thunderous clap (Tenor) Ooooooh, the hour has come (Soprano) Nooooo, don’t let him die (Cowboy chorus) Draw, boy, draw Don’t let that outlaw cross the line (Tenor) For love (Cowboys) For glory (All) For one more honky-tonk tonight I jumped up with the whole crowd Clapping like I’d seen a thing Her daddy asked me what I thought I said, “That cowboy sure could sing” My girl just looked at me and smiled “There wasn’t any cowboy in the thing”

Space Cowboy

Now Brenda, honey, just put that down and listen to me. I know exactly what this looks like. But I swear on my favorite boots, it ain't what you think I was twelve beers deep at the Stirrup & Spur The midnight county road was a beautiful blur Drivin’ my truck back home to the farm Nothin’ but good intentions, wasn't meanin' no harm Then my headlights died and the sky turned blue A neon green saucer cut the midnight in two It hovered right over our pasture field And a glowing light beam broke the night shield There went Bessie the heifer, floating up in the air Kickin' her hooves, lookin’ very scared They were taking my cow, so I lost my mind I grabbed onto her tail and left the earth behind Yeah, I’m a space-cowboy, rocket-fueled and rowdy Flyin’ past Mars yellin' "Hey there, howdy!” Got the spaceship rockin' on a cosmic track With the pedal to the metal, yeah, we ain't lookin' back We did the intergalactic spin Drinkin' shots with the little green men Well, I woke up locked in a laser-beam cage With a Martian readin' my temperature gauge They were poking at Bessie, trying to see how she ticks So I busted through the bars with some good ole country tricks I said, "Hold it, little fellow, put down the space probe, Or I'll kick your green butt clean across the globe I’m a good ole country boy, I don't play that game" Then I pulled out a jar with no label or name The captain said, “Partner, what's that jar?” I said, “That's how you make the moon shine from afar” I poured 'em a round of that high-octane brew Next thing you know, they didn’t know what to do I talked my way out, and I made it to the comms Grabbed the microphone and sounded the alarm: "Space-Control to Honky-Tonk. Come in, Honky-Tonk!" Yeah, I’m a space-cowboy, rocket-fueled and rowdy Flyin’ past Mars yellin' "Hey there, howdy!” Got the spaceship rockin' on a cosmic track With the pedal to the metal, yeah, we ain't lookin' back We did the intergalactic spin Drinkin' shots with the little green men The radar went wild, I yelled, “Houston... we have a party!" We were loop-de-loopin' Saturn, gettin' rowdy and hearty The captain hit the thrusters, yelled, "Back down to Earth, son! We gotta find a dive bar before the night is done” So we parked sideways on the county road Hit the local joint to let the good times roll Captain did the two-step on six little feet; Bessie ate the bar tab, so the drinks were free The thrusters hit the dirt right by the tractor shed They dropped me off at dawn with a pounding in my head... ...And I'm tellin' ya, Brenda That's exactly why I'm late They dropped me off by the silo I didn't lose my pants... The Martians took 'em for... interstellar research What do you mean glitter…? Why am I covered in glitter... That’s... space dust, honey Pure space dust Don't look at me like that... I saved Bessie! Brenda? Put down the frying pan... Brenda! ...Yee-haw…

Those Fiddle Boots

Aw, no... Not again Found 'em in a shop down in Collierville Twenty bucks and they fit me well Old man grinned when I pulled 'em on Said, "Son, there's one thing you oughta know" Said, "They'll walk just fine, they'll ride all day They'll even keep you dry in the pouring rain But if you're somewhere when the band cuts loose" He shook his head, said, "Watch them boots" I laughed and paid him Thought he'd lost his mind Till Saturday night 'Bout a quarter past nine Those fiddle boots, those fiddle boots Got a mind and a rhythm of their own When that bow hits the strings They start doin' things I swear I never learned back home I can grab that bar I can beg 'em to quit But there ain't no use When that fiddle gets hot Better clear me a spot Here come those fiddle boots! I was two beers in when the fiddle man Put that bow to "Orange Blossom" and My right heel kicked and my left foot slid Lord have mercy, look what I did I spun one girl clear across the floor Then two more lined up by the door Everybody hollered, "Boy, where'd you learn?" I said, "I don't know, but here I turn!" I tried to sit down They stood me back up Fiddler saw me dancing Said, "Let's speed it up!" Those fiddle boots, those fiddle boots Got a mind and a rhythm of their own When that bow hits the strings They start doin' things I swear I never learned back home I can grab that bar I can beg 'em to quit But there ain't no use When that fiddle gets hot Better clear me a spot Here come those fiddle boots! By midnight I was king of the floor Girls kept askin' me for one dance more Funny how a curse don't seem so bad When you're the best damn dancer that town ever had So now every Friday I shine 'em bright Find me a honky-tonk Saturday night I don't ask who's playing, just one thing will do: "Y'all got a fiddle player coming through?" My buddy said, "Thought you couldn't dance." I can't....Uh-oh.

The Forest as My Grave

Watched the dirt fall from my hand Cold wind calls me through the pine Sunlight fades from this hollowed land Where the roots and the briars twine Leaving this hollow now Drifting far away Beneath the cedar bough Lost to break of day The dirt is fresh upon the hill Where I laid her down to rest Now the world is stark and still Walking broken and unblessed I’ll take the trail where no one goes Where the shadows swallow light Leave behind the pain I know And disappear into the night Leaving this hollow now Drifting far away Beneath the cedar bough Lost to break of day Let the moss grow over my boots Let the fog become my breath Tangled in the ancient roots I’ll wait out this living death The mountains are a heavy tomb For a man with naught to save I will find a quiet room With the forest as my grave Leaving this hollow now Drifting far away Beneath the cedar bough Lost to break of day Fading in the mist… Gone into the grey…

Midnight in Texas

Neon buzzing at a Texas truck stop Summer heat still in the air You were sleepin’ in Tennessee I was wishin’ I was there Then that song you make up words to Came through my open truck door I jumped in and cranked it louder Let that old Ford roar Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you Got a whole lotta love and some drivin’ to do Let the rain keep time, let the radio play Got an “I love you” I can’t wait to say Baby, look what lovin’ you can do Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you Rain was drummin’ on the pickup Summer thunder playin’ bass I was singin’ both our parts Couldn’t wipe that grin off my face Didn’t call to say, “I’m comin’” Let you sleep the whole night through Had no plans past your front porch I’d leave that part to you Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you Got a whole lotta love and some drivin’ to do Let the rain keep time, let the radio play Got an “I love you” I can’t wait to say Baby, look what lovin’ you can do Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you Your porch light was still glowin’ When that screen door opened wide You came barefoot in my old T-shirt Laughin’ as you rubbed your eyes “I drove all night…” “For what?” “For you” Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you Had a whole lotta love and some drivin’ to do Let the sun come up, let that screen door swing Got you in my arms, girl, I got everything Baby, look what lovin’ you can do Midnight in Texas, mornin’ with you I’d drive a thousand miles For a sunrise by your side Just to tell you I love you Under Tennessee skies

A Thousand Miles Before Morning

[Intro — Male] It was midnight in Texas And the heat was rising on the road I knocked back half a six-pack With a heart I didn't know how to hold Then cutting through the midnight howling A song came bleeding through And every word I'd kept locked up Was crying out for you So I turned the key [Verse 1 — Male] Neon from the truck stop Was dying cold and blue Lightning walked the western sky And every road ran back to you I'd spent half my life believing There'd always be another day Another morning, another chance Another safer thing to say But youth don't send a warning When it starts running out And love don't live forever On the things you almost shout So I threw my cigarette into the wind Put both hands against the wheel And somewhere underneath my ribs I finally let myself feel [Pre-Chorus — Male] There are moments when tomorrow Feels like one more lie you tell And waiting for the sun to rise Feels too damn much like hell [Chorus — Male] I've got a thousand miles before morning And your name burning holes through the dark Eight cylinders pulling me eastward Like somebody struck a match inside my heart Let the thunder break above me Let the whole night come apart If there's a state line left between us I'll leave it burning in the dark I've got a thousand miles before morning And one thing I should've said years ago If I make it to your front porch, baby I'm never letting silence win again I'm burning out the pistons till the engine cries Just to tell you I love you under Tennessee skies [Verse 2 — Male] I left the flatlands in the mirror With the old life falling back Every town became a taillight Every regret another mile of black Rain came sideways through the window Summer lightning split the fields The old truck shook beneath me Like it knew exactly how I feel That V8 wasn't transportation It was confession made of steel Every piston drove a memory Every mile stripped something real The man who pulled out of that truck stop Had excuses by the load But somewhere east of nowhere I started throwing 'em off the road My pride went first in pieces Then every lie I'd learned to wear By the time I crossed the river There wasn't much of him still there [Pre-Chorus — Male] I wasn't driving toward salvation I wasn't running from my past I just knew if love was waiting I was done arriving last [Chorus — Male] I've got a thousand miles before morning And your name burning holes through the dark Eight cylinders pulling me eastward Like somebody struck a match inside my heart Let the rain erase my footprints Let the old me fall apart If there's a lifetime left between us I'll cross every mile before it starts I've got a thousand miles before morning And one thing I should've said years ago If I make it to your front porch, baby I'm never letting silence win again [Post-Chorus — Male] So let me go Tearing through the darkness Just to see your face Outrunning every highway clock And winning this midnight race [Breakdown — Female] I woke sometime past midnight Don't know what woke me then Thunder moving through the valley Rain against the window screen I walked barefoot through the kitchen While the wind began to howl Something strange was in the darkness Like a ghost out on the prowl [Male Response] I'd spent too many evenings Being almost brave enough And there are only so many times A heart can beg for almost-love [Female] I turned the porch light on I felt the wind call my name And stood there in the doorway Underneath the summer rain [Verse 3 — Male] By dawnless hours Tennessee Was rising underneath my wheels The highway lost its straight-line nerve And started climbing through the hills I left the interstate behind me And outran every ghost I've made Found Highway 68 twisting Through the darkness like a blade For men who'd finally lost the map And spent their whole lives on the run For rusted roofs and sleeping barns Waiting on the sun Starr Mountain stood against the sky Black enough to hide a prayer Oak limbs closed above the road Till headlights were the only stars up there The radio was screaming mercy Storm had burned away The engine roared like bleeding fire And everything I came to say [Bridge — Male] I've wasted years on being careful I've worn good sense like chains I've stood beneath a cloudless sky And somehow still expected rain I've loved you from a distance Like distance made it safe Like keeping one foot near the doorway Could save me from the pain But safe is just another word For dying by degrees And I would rather lose tomorrow Than lose tonight So if this truck throws a rod If the tires give up their fight If the road ends at the mountain And the shadows swallow light I'll get out and keep on walking Till these boots wear down to stone Because the man who left that Texas night Is tired of running all alone [Verse 4 — Male] The sky was barely turning gray When I found the county road Brick storefronts sleeping downtown Old signs fading above closed doors Then pavement turned to gravel And gravel narrowed down Past a mailbox leaning sideways Past the last light in the town Oak branches made a ceiling Over one more quiet mile Then through the early morning dark I saw your porch light And every mile behind me Every thunderhead I'd crossed Every word I'd swallowed whole Every year I'd somehow lost... [Final Chorus / Duet] [Male] There were a thousand miles before morning [Female] And you crossed every one through the dark [Male] I came here carrying everything broken [Female] You don't have to carry it this far [Female] Let the daylight find us different Let it find us where we are No more highways left between us No more loving from afar [Female] Tell me what you came here for [Male] I came to say I love you Before another morning came I came to say I'm tired of leaving Every time I get afraid I came to burn the map behind me I came to stop outrunning truth I drove a thousand miles... [Female] For what? [Male] For you! [Final Refrain — Both] No more almost No more someday [Male] I wanna watch the sun come up And watch the shadows burn away I've driven through a thousand miles of darkness, baby... And I'd drive a million more Just to watch the dawn break in your eyes And to hold you in my arms

Passing Through

Six hours past tired on a Midwest run AM preacher talking through the static hum Corn black as midnight, no headlights in view Just the line on the road pulling morning through Old truckers call 'em the Stumbling Saints Walking that shoulder where the highway fades Every hand held a jar, every neck held time Broken watch faces catching my headlights' shine Truckers told me what a man should do Keep both hands steady, you're only passing through Don't slow down for what calls out to you Keep your eyes ahead when the dead come into view Say it once beneath your breath I'm only passing through One jar held water, one was full of moths Some held nothing but a light that wouldn't stop A woman stepped out where the center stripe ran Eyes closed tight, one blessing in her hand Something tapped the window One-two, one-two And every mile behind me disappeared from view The dash clock froze at twelve-nineteen That preacher kept asking if I was awake or dreaming I killed the radio, but his voice came through Let us walk you home I said, I'm only passing through Don't slow down for what calls out to you Keep your eyes ahead when the dead come into view Say it once beneath your breath I'm only passing through Found a hitchhiker standing in the breakdown lane Old coat in summer, watch hung on a chain He climbed in quiet, said, “Don't be polite If they come to the window, son, you keep driving tonight” I asked where he was headed, he stared straight ahead “Forward's good enough when you're riding with the dead” Every exit brought me back to where I'd been Every green sign promised the same town again Then I looked to my right Empty passenger seat Just a cracked watch staring back at me I thought about stopping Thought about turning around Then I heard those bare feet Dragging soft across the ground I'm passing through, Ain't every blessing meant for you If they tap upon your window, don't ask who Keep your hands at ten and two Keep that white line running true And say it like you mean it I'm only passing through If the preacher asks if you're awake don't answer him Just drive

Swallow Me, Appalachia

I woke with the ridge pressed hard on my chest Cold day, wet boots, no place to rest The creek keeps its counsel, the pines lean low I’ve got nowhere left that I want to go Swallow me, Appalachia Take my name down under the stone Fold me up in the mountain’s silence Let me quit carrying this alone The porch boards groan where my father stood I tried to be somebody steady and good But every road bends back to the same old ache And I’m tired of waking for waking’s sake Swallow me, Appalachia Take my name down under the stone Fold me up in the mountain’s silence Let me quit carrying this alone If there’s a hollow deep enough to hide Let the dark be kind; let the walls hold tight No grand farewell, no last words to save Just the rain on the laurel and the dirt in my face Swallow me, Appalachia Take my name down under the stone Fold me up in the mountain’s silence Let me quit carrying this alone Let me quit carrying this alone

The Girl You Knew

Luke came by every morning Parked that old Ford by the drive Brought me gas-station carnations Like flowers might prove I was alive I held one up to the window Watched the red fade into white Said, “Baby, these are dying” He said nothing, I was right Mama told the school I'm sick I haven't been back since that night Men with notebooks ask their questions I give answers short and right Tall man, black coat, somewhere in the pines That's about all they're gonna get There's some things you can walk away from That don't ever let you leave And Luke still reaches for my hand Like he always used to do But I can feel him wondering If I'm still the girl he knew I'm still here But I ain't who I was Something followed me out of those woods Something I can't outrun I still know your hands I still know your name I can still say “I love you” But it don't sound quite the same If you're looking in my eyes For the girl you knew I'm still here She's just harder to get to He'll sit for hours in that pickup With the engine cold and still Watching Mama's front door open Like someday the old me will Come running barefoot through the rain Laughing like I used to laugh With some worn-out book beneath my arm And no shadow at my back Sometimes I see him watching me When he thinks I don't know Looking for some little sign That I didn't all let go I'm still here But I ain't who I was Something followed me out of those woods Something I can't outrun I still know your hands I still know your name I can still say “I love you” But it don't sound quite the same If you're looking in my eyes For the girl you knew I'm still here She's just harder to get to My eyes are still blue At least that's what they say But blue can turn to midnight Without changing its name And if I hold you different If I don't laugh on cue Don't love me like I'm missing I'm standing here with you I'm still here Maybe different ain't gone Maybe surviving changes What surviving leaves you from I still want your hands I still answer to my name And when I say “I love you” Maybe love can learn the change So don't search these eyes For some girl I used to be If you're gonna love me, Luke Love the one who made it free Those carnations lost their color I left them by my bed Funny how a thing can still be beautiful While it's dying anyway

Carrying the Ashes

I kept a bottle by the kitchen sink And called it company when I couldn't think Took what I found and called the damage small Till every good thing had its back to the wall I’m still carrying the ashes Of the life I burned away They sift through both my hands No matter where I lay I’m angry at the wanting And ashamed of what I chose Still carrying the ashes Everywhere I go I learned the names of places open late And how to make a promise sound like fate You stood there waiting with your coat in hand I watched you leave and barely understand I’m still carrying the ashes Of the life I burned away They sift through both my hands No matter where I lay I’m angry at the wanting And ashamed of what I chose Still carrying the ashes Everywhere I go I won't dress it up as trouble Or lay the blame on some old scar I knew the road was running out I drove it hard, I drove too far I’m still carrying the ashes Of the life I burned away Some mornings I can name the cost Some nights I can't quite say I’m angry at the wanting And ashamed of what I chose Still carrying the ashes Everywhere I go The fire's gone cold. I still smell smoke.

Looking for a Light

It was a cold dark night I was looking for a light For my broken cigarette After getting in a fight Trying to forget The sour flavor of regret I walked off down the road With that cold beneath my coat In the darkness of the road I heard a rumblin’ engine roar A truck just stopped beside me I felt the weakness in my knees Then the window rolled down And I heard the music loud It wasn’t coming through the speakers It was underneath the ground Then that passenger door swung open Something called me by my name Tried to turn and walk away But I climbed in anyway That empty backroad highway Started changing as we drove Until that pitch-black darkness Gave way to neon signs The truck stopped on Lower Broad And we rolled into the night One honky-tonk after another Lookin’ for a real good time I was running with the neon Under Nashville city lights Letting steel guitars and whiskey Shake the trouble from my mind From midnight into sunrise I forgot what started the fight I came looking for a little flame Nashville gave me back the light I went raging with my demons Through those city neon lights Till the steel guitar drowned ’em out Somewhere close to closing time I was running with the neon Under Nashville city lights Letting steel guitars and whiskey Shake the trouble from my mind From midnight into sunrise I forgot what started the fight I came looking for a little flame Nashville gave me back the light At dawn they dropped me at the Ryman To catch the first sunlight Then drove into the horizon Disappearing out of sight Funny thing, I never lit that cigarette.

Let that Good Life Heal

The house got quiet when Mama left Her coffee cup stayed by the sink I wore that ache beneath my shirt And lost more sleep than I could think At work I smiled when I had to Then counted coins beneath the light The rent came due, the cupboards thinned And every room felt twice as wide I was running on an empty tank With no green pasture in my view Then a song came through the radio And pulled me back like only songs can do Thank you, country music, for finding me When I was too tired to believe You put a little fire in my hands And taught this heart to breathe Now I sing with the windows down Let the whole wide county hear Thank you, country music, for bringing me back I’m glad to still be here I learned that hurt can ride beside you Without deciding where you go Some mornings still come hard and heavy But I don’t face them down alone I take the long way past the grain bins Watch the first gold on the fields And hear my mother in the quiet Saying, “Honey, let that good life heal” I was one more bill from breaking One more night from giving in Then that six-string found my heartbeat And showed me how to start again Thank you, country music, for finding me When I was too tired to believe You put a little fire in my hands And taught this heart to breathe Now I sing with the windows down Let the whole wide county hear Thank you, country music, for bringing me back I’m glad to still be here I still miss her at the table Still talk to her on the porch But the love she left inside me Is a light I can’t ignore So I’ll work, I’ll laugh, I’ll keep on moving Make the most of every mile And when the hard days come around I’ll answer them with a smile Thank you, country music, for finding me When I was too tired to believe You put a little fire in my hands And taught this heart to breathe Now I sing with the windows down Let the whole wide county hear Thank you, country music, for bringing me back I’m glad to still be here I’m glad to still be here With the sun across the windshield And a song that sounds like home For my Mom September 22, 2017

January First

January first, the county road was white My boots sank in the snow before first light I’d let the years pile up like split wood by the shed And couldn’t find a reason to get out of bed I’m so tired of standing still With a heart I can’t persuade Let the mountains take my name Let the ridge erase my way If the morning comes and I’m gone from sight Don’t go searching through the frost On the first day of January Let me disappear into those hills I’ve loved The kettle clicked, the house stayed cold Last year’s calendar hung beside the phone I called my brother, let it ring and ring Couldn’t make my mouth say anything I’m so tired of standing still With a heart I can’t persuade Let the mountains take my name Let the ridge erase my way If the morning comes and I’m gone from sight Don’t go searching through the frost On the first day of January Let me disappear into those hills I’ve loved Outside, a dog barked once down by the hollow And a neighbor’s porch light held its place I took one step back toward the doorway And let the cold air touch my face I’m so tired of standing still But I’m trying anyway Let the mountains take my name Let the ridge erase my way On this cold winter morning Let me drift into the day On January first I'll fade away

A Little Bit of Nowhere

That highway sign said Birmingham But I took a gravel road instead Past a weathered red old barn And a faded tobacco sign overhead There was a creek bed running by With the cottonwoods leaning low At the county line I crossed another line Into a whole new state to go Dust on the fenders, sun on the dash A little bit of nowhere moving fast Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead Two hands on the wheel and a heart full of speed From the county line to a brand-new sky Sing it with me as the miles roll by Hey, hey, wherever this road may roam Every backroad turn feels a little like home Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead There’s a whole lot of life in the miles we leave The radio played a little country Through a speaker buzzing sweet and low A fiddle found a dancing answer When the tires found their steady flow I waved at a farmer by the gate He tipped his hat and grinned at me Like he knew that every wandering heart Needs a road to set it free Dust on the fenders, sun on the dash A little bit of nowhere moving fast Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead Two hands on the wheel and a heart full of speed From the county line to a brand-new sky Sing it with me as the miles roll by Hey, hey, wherever this road may roam Every backroad turn feels a little like home Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead There’s a whole lot of life in the miles we leave Maybe Birmingham was where I meant to be But the gravel had a better plan for me One more bend, one more field, one more town The best kind of lost is the way you’re found Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead Two hands on the wheel and a heart full of speed From the county line to a brand-new sky Sing it with me as the miles roll by Hey, hey, wherever this road may roam Every backroad turn feels a little like home Roll on, roll on, let the good road lead There’s a whole lot of life in the miles we leave That highway sign said Birmingham But the gravel road knew where I’d go

Hell of a Night

Been workin’ so long Hauling sand and stones But now it is the weekend And I’m ready for some fun So I’m hitting Lower Broad Until the crack of dawn My Stetson and my boots I feel like a loaded gun The night feels so rowdy Been lookin’ for a party Just lookin’ for some trouble You better make it double So crowded at the door I just wanna hit the floor I looked across the street A new honky-tonk I’d never seen Went to check it out Through a long red corridor Then it took me underground This place looks like a mine Saw a girl by the bar, her hair piled high Pretty enough to make me lose my mind I said, “Where you been all my life?” She laughed, “Been here since nineteen eighty-five” There are old railroad tracks Lots of doors in the dark Someone came out of the shadows Placed a cold key in my palm You gotta choose a door If you wanna keep your soul You only get one try So you better pick it right If you’re runnin’ through the night You gotta learn to fight The darkness and the fire Or you’re gonna burn and die This rockin’ country music Is gonna show you the way Just listen to the rhythm Don’t you stop to kneel and pray Trust your intuition When you open up the door The country gods will guide you You just gotta let it go So I stood before a door On the left side of the hall ’Bout to turn the key My skin began to crawl I kept on moving backward Waiting for a door to call my name I stopped in front of a steel door That rhythm told me, “That’s the one” Decided to try my luck Put the key in the slot Turned the key slowly And the midnight world went hot If you’re runnin’ through the night You gotta learn to fight The darkness and the fire Or you’re gonna burn and die This rockin’ country music Is gonna show you the way Just listen to the rhythm Don’t you stop to kneel and pray Trust your intuition When you open up the door The country gods will guide you You just gotta let it go I made it back to Broadway Just before the morning light That cold key still in my pocket And her number from nineteen eighty-five If you ask me what happened I couldn’t tell you if I tried I only know I made it out And brother, what a hell of a night

Country Music in My Soul

I punched the clock with a pocket full of worries Dust on my boots and a long way to go Then the radio found me somewhere past the county line And turned that heavy heart into a rollin' road When the hard days lean like a fence in the wind I turn that old six-string up and grin Country music shows me the light Fiddle cuts loose and the steel takes flight Chases my pain down a two-lane mile Leaves me laughing like a kid for a while At the honky-tonk, I never feel blue With a room full of friends and a song breaking through Country music is my life, and I know it's true Life gets better with a song and a little country in you I learned to hold on from the voices before me Hank on the jukebox, Dolly in my soul Keith brought the fire, Johnny told the story Kris and Willie made the wide world feel like home Waylon and Merle kept the wheels rolling steady Those old roads still run through everything I do When tomorrow comes knocking with a brand-new test I find a dance floor and I give it my best Country music shows me the light Fiddle cuts loose and the steel takes flight Chases my pain down a two-lane mile Leaves me laughing like a kid for a while At the honky-tonk, I never feel blue With a room full of friends and a song breaking through Country music is my life, and I know it's true Life gets better with a song and a little country in you Conway, George, Reba, Randy, Dwight and Garth Alan, Toby, Kix and Ronnie left a map across my heart Brad, Zach, Ella, Cody, Riley, Carter, Lainey, Kacey too Every one of you made this life feel brighter than I knew Country music shows me the light Fiddle cuts loose and the steel takes flight Chases my pain down a two-lane mile Leaves me laughing like a kid for a while At the honky-tonk, I never feel blue With a room full of friends and a song breaking through Country music is my life, and I know it's true Life gets better with a song and a little country in you Keep that old highway humming, let the good times roll Country music in my heart, country music in my soul
